Can a Smartphone breathalyzer prevent a DUI?

In Colorado, something new is being tried in the form of a smartphone breathalyzer. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) distributed the devices, which come in the form of a Smartphone app, to 225 people on a random basis throughout the Denver area. They were to use the device over the summer months and then provide feedback on the experience.

The survey results indicated that the app reduced the chances of driving while impaired, and also helped the participants gain knowledge to better determine when they might have consumed too much alcohol.

How it works

The app can be downloaded on any Smartphone, similar to the R-U-Buzzed Smartphone app that Colorado also uses, which requires a combination of gender, weight, alcohol consumed and time drinking to determine whether someone is over the limit.

The blood alcohol content (BAC) reading is provided, and the one-screen interface makes it easy to start a new reading anytime one is necessary. While it is not 100 percent accurate, it does provide much more information to someone who may not be sure if they're over the limit.

It is still recommended to designate a driver if you are going to drink, but Smartphone apps can and do help protect people who may not realize how much alcohol they have consumed.

The benefits of a Smartphone breathalyzer

The biggest benefit of the Smartphone breathalyzer is its ease of use. Nearly everyone has a Smartphone today, and that means they can all download and use the app to help them avoid a DUI. Another benefit is helping people who drink gain knowledge of when they have had enough, or whether they have consumed too much to drive safely and legally.

Many of the participants in the survey stated that they may have driven when they were over the limit in the past, mostly because they did not have a way to tell if they had exceeded the limit for a DUI or not.

Facing a DUI charge

If you aren't using the app, or you otherwise end up facing a DUI charge, it's very important to work with an attorney. Having a legal advocate on your side can help you work out the best defense possible, and ensure that you have the best chance of a successful outcome to your situation. There are no guarantees, but it can be difficult to represent yourself. You need someone who knows the DUI laws for your state, and who has successfully handled cases like yours before, so you can put the DUI behind you as quickly as possible.
