Charges are always worth fighting, even the small ones

| Jan 3, 2017 | criminal defense

Being charged with a crime is always a matter to be taken seriously, but most people don’t have a good handle on what distinguishes the various kinds of charges. Many of us will experience some sort of criminal charge in our lifetime, even if it is only a relatively small infraction.

No matter what charges you or a loved one may be facing, the representation of an experienced attorney is almost always likely to yield a more desirable result than doing nothing to fight to fight the charges, even for seemingly minor matters like traffic violations.

Just because it’s a small charge doesn’t mean it’s a just charge

The least serious kind of criminal charge is an infraction. These are the kinds of charges that arise from some sort of minor violation, such as speeding or littering, or letting your grass get too high in your front lawn.

It is usually simple enough to deal with an infraction. You will usually be asked to pay a fine, and possibly appear in court, but it’s no big deal in the grand scheme of things, right?

Possibly, yes. There are two distinct issues at hand. First, simply paying the fines and making your court appearance may be enough to satisfy the charges, but there may be larger consequences, especially when it comes to traffic violations.

Traffic violation convictions can lead to heavily increased insurance premiums, which amount to an ongoing punishment for simple mistake or even an unfair charge from an officer who was not in a charitable mood when he or she encountered you.

Secondly, just because you have been charged with a violation doesn’t mean that the charges are justified. While many of the men and women who serve in our police force are people of integrity who would never abuse their authority, there are those who would abuse it.

You probably have either experienced or know someone who has experienced an unfair traffic charge or other kind of charge. While it is absolutely infuriating to face unfair charges, there is no need to simply sit back and take it. This is still the land of the free and the home of the brave in many ways, and you are still able to fight against charges of any kind in a courtroom.

Get the help you need to keep your record as clean as possible

It might seem unnecessary to hire a lawyer to defend against an infraction charge, but this is all a matter of perspective. On one hand, you can simply pay the fine and accept the charges, and that will be what it is.

However, it is wiser to consider the long-term consequences of even small violations on your record. Especially if the charge you received was not just to begin with, you may face increased insurance premiums, and, in some rare cases, difficulty obtaining certain kinds of employment.

Beyond the practical matter of fines and points on your license or marks on your record, there is the matter of dignity. You deserve to be represented fairly, not subjected to the whim of the court or officers who don’t appreciate who you are a person.

With the representation of an experienced attorney, you can fight even minor charges and ensure that your rights remain protected in the justice system.
