Single parents: 4 ways to spend the weekend with your kids

You might have fought months to receive your much-deserved visitation rights. Now you have your children every other weekend. It's a dream come true for you and you want to make the most of your time with your kids.

If you're not sure what kinds of things to do with your children on your weekends together, peruse the following list. Add your own spin to the following activities, and both you and your kids are sure to have a blast.

4 fun things to do with your kids

Go for an epic bike ride: There's nothing more healthy and fun than going for a long bike ride with your children. Just be sure that all your bikes are well-maintained and are the right sizes for everyone. Also, be sure that you and your kids have properly fitted helmets. Plan out your route together beforehand with a map, or just go for an impromptu exploration and see where it leads.

Game night: Parcheesi anyone? How about Scrabble, playing cards, Uno or Monopoly? Once you break out the board games you'll wonder why it's been so long since the last time you played. You can easily spend a Saturday playing a variety of board games, and you just might want to have a rematch on Sunday.

Neighborhood treks: Whether you live close to beautiful walking trails or it's just a walk through the local hood, you can have a lot of fun with your kids getting out in the sun for a walk. Consider looking up local nature trails as well. Children love these kinds of outdoor adventures with mom or dad.

Laundry day and yard work: Whoever said they wanted to do chores with mom and dad? Actually, your kids will probably enjoy household work if you have the right attitude and you join them in the activities. Nobody wants to do boring chores alone, but if you do them with your kids you can teach them a variety of skills -- like washing and folding laundry, ironing clothes and cleaning the bathroom -- that will serve them well into adulthood. Consider breaking out the garden tools and doing some work in the yard as well.

Get creative with your ideas and come up with something new!

You know what you like and you probably know what your kids like, too. Sit down with them and brainstorm ideas for a fun day, then go do it. The more creative you get with your ideas, the better time you'll have. Finally, make sure to keep a parenting journal of all your adventures with your kids. Not only will this journal help you save the memories, but it creates a record of what a good parent you are in the event that your parenting rights ever get challenged.
